The rest of the week was easy. Mr Rijnma ter Salis didn’t come in at all and the registrars, dealing with pacemakers and angiocardiographies, gave no hint as to where he was. Eugenie went off duty on Friday night feeling frustrated. She tried not to think of him enjoying himself somewhere with his Saphira, and pondered over her weekend. Sunday she had already planned more or less—a visit to the St Martinikerk and a tour on foot of the city, a snack lunch in one of its many coffee shops, and an afternoon in the Prinsenhof gardens, tea—an elegant tea, she thought—in one of the hotels and then back to the hospital. Monday was going to be a long day…

Saturday was a different matter. There was a great deal to see in Groningen but it was a chance to see something of the surrounding country. She would take a bus; she had a timetable and the names of some of the towns were very intriguing. She decided on Heiligerlee for no other reason than that its name appealed to her. There were buses to Winschoten close by and, as far as she could see, it was on or near a main road. Twenty-three miles was no distance and there was a train service as well…

Having arranged her weekend to her satisfaction, she spent a cheerful evening in the pleasant sitting-room with her colleagues off duty, watching on television first of all an American film with subtitles, which made it hard to follow since the text in a strange language prevented her from listening to the characters. Then there was an interview—one serious elderly man questioning another equally serious man, talking, as far as she was concerned, nonsense.
